History Of Engine Co. 1

In 1900 when Secaucus became an independent community, Engine Company #1, was founded. Engine Company #1, formerly known as Secaucus Hose Company #1 was first located in the Plaza where Segro's Corner Market was, on Front Street. On January 20, 1903 Engine Company #1 was approved as the second company in the Secaucus Volunteer Fire Department. The town council paid for the hose and carriage which the company previously purchased. Shortly after the completion of Town Hall in 1909, the company relocated. As the town grew so did the need for more municipal offices and space for a larger Police Department.

In 1950 the members of Engine Company #1 started looking for a new building of their own. It was not until six years later that a new firehouse was proposed and only after the members put in a newspaper campaign to win support from the public. Upon completion in 1957 the company moved into its present location on Plaza Center Road.

Just 41 years later, in 1998, another move was proposed by the Town Council. The move was brought upon by the growth of the town library which shares the building with Engine Company #1. Once again history seemed to be repeating itself.... In May 1999, it was decided upon by the Town Council and in agreement with the Membership of Engine Company #1 not to relocate the firehouse but instead the library into the larger property located on Plaza Center Road.
