3rd alarm fire

3rd Alarm Fire - 716 3rd St -  10/10/2009 @ 11:30 hrs

Units were dispatched to a report of a heavy smoke conditon coming from 716 3rd Street, Battalion Chief Parisi was the 1st arriving unit on the scene and gave a "Working Fire" for Heavy Smoke Showing from a 2 1/2 Story Wood-Frame. Engine 1 was the 1st Due Engine, stretched 1 3/4 through front door of home. Engine 1 located the fire in the basement, but were unable to make good advancement due at a narrow staircase. Engine 2 & 3 stretched 1 3/4 to rear basement entrance. Tower 2 & Ladder 1 immediately began primary search. Multiple attempts to make basement were attempted & were hampered by a maze of partions in the basement & a heavy smoke condition.

2nd Alarm was struck shortly after initial evacuation of building. Mutual aid incoming fire aparatus was redirected to the scene. Additional attempts were made to make entry into the first and 2nd floors. All attempts were unsucessful due to the heavy fire conditions in the basement & 1st floor. Two 2 1/2 line and multiple 1 3/4 lines were put into operation from the outside. As the fire darkened down Secaucus Tower Ladder 2 vented the roof, an interior attack resumed. 3rd alarm was transmitted for standby into Secaucus. Conditions approved after the exterior attack.

Major overhall was then conducted on the interior of the basement & 1st floor. During extensive overhaul with still a heavy smoke condition, firefighters from Secaucus Engine 1 & Carlstadt Engine 702 were working on the first floor D side of building operating a 1 3/4 inch line when a partial collapse of the first floor occurred. Firefighter Robert Recanati of Carlstadt Engine 703 fell through the hole up to his waist. Lt. Frank Prezioso of Secaucus Engine 1 and Capt. John Lyons of Carlstadt Engine 702 immediately grabbed Firefighter Recanti and held on to him so that he would not fall totally through. Together the two firefighters, under extreme dangerous conditions of total collapse, were able to pull him back through the hole and evacute him out of the building with only minor injuries. Due to the quick action of both Lt. Prezioso & Capt. Lyons they were able to save FF Recanati from more serious injuries.
